New Cedar Fence
New cedar has to dry out before it'll take stain. In Lubbock's dry climate that usually happens sooner than it would in humid places. We check moisture rather than going by the calendar.
Lubbock, Texas · South Plains
Bare cedar in Lubbock goes gray fast. Strong sun, dry air and wind-blown grit work on the surface every day, and an unstained fence starts checking and cupping sooner than it would in a wetter place. A good penetrating stain keeps the color, slows the cracking and makes the fence look finished. Staining is the most-searched fence service in Lubbock, and it's work we like, because it shows.

We clean off the gray layer and mildew with a wood cleaner or brightener, rinse, and let it dry before staining. Skipping this step is why some stain jobs peel within a year.

Steel pipe fence and ornamental metal get scraped, spot-primed and repainted where rust has started.
Soaks into the wood and fades rather than peels. Our usual pick for cedar privacy fence.
Faster dry, easier cleanup, wider color range. Modern formulas hold up well.
More pigment means more UV protection and less grain showing. In full South Plains sun, semi-transparent is the sweet spot for most cedar.
NOAA's 1991–2020 normals give Lubbock about 63 days a year with measurable precipitation and 18.33 inches total, with much of it falling May through September. Stain needs a dry fence and a dry day after, so we schedule around rain in the forecast. Wind matters too. Lubbock averages close to 12 mph year-round and April averages 13.8 in NOAA's 2015–2024 records, so we spray and back-brush on calmer days and protect cars, brick and plants from overspray.
Sun-facing south and west runs fade first. Plan on re-coating when the color fades and water stops beading, not on a fixed schedule. Solid stains last longer between coats but eventually need prep before recoating.
HomeGuide's 2026 guide lists fence staining or painting at $2 to $14 per linear foot, or $300 to $2,800 for 100 to 150 feet, and $100 to $600 to stain a walk gate. National figures, not our quote.
