Wire Fence Types

Barbed wire strands clipped to a green T-post, Lubbock, TX

Barbed Wire

Four or five strands for cattle. Inexpensive per foot and quick to build on long runs. Not a good choice for horses, which can tangle and cut themselves.

Woven wire field fence with goats grazing beyond, Lubbock, TX

Woven Wire and Field Fence

Fixed-knot or hinge-joint mesh that holds sheep, goats and calves. Often topped with one or two barbed strands to keep cattle from leaning over it.

Horse grazing behind mesh horse fence with a white sight board, Lubbock, TX

Horse Fence

Smooth wire, no-climb mesh, or a pipe top rail over mesh. We avoid barbs and sharp ends where horses run.

Hog Panels and Welded Wire Panels

Rigid panels for pig pens, gardens, and smaller pastures near the house.

Corners Do the Work

A wire fence is only as tight as its end assemblies. We build H-braces or pipe corner assemblies at every corner, end and gate. Line posts are steel T-posts or pipe, spaced to the stock and the wire. Long straight runs get pull assemblies partway down so wire can be re-stretched in sections.

Rules That Apply

Inside the City

Lubbock bans barbed wire, concertina, razor wire and electrified components on residential fences unless the fence is for permitted livestock. Where livestock is permitted, chicken wire, hog wire and welded or woven wire fabric are allowed, and electric fence is allowed with warning signs posted.

Along a Highway

Texas Agriculture Code §143.102 says an owner may not knowingly let a horse, mule, donkey, cow, bull, steer, hog, sheep or goat roam at large, unattended, on the right-of-way of a highway. A tight fence along a highway frontage is your first line of defense.

Shared Fences With a Neighbor

Under Texas Agriculture Code §143.121, you can't remove a dividing fence you jointly own, or a fence attached to a neighbor's fence, without consent or following the statute. To pull your fence off a neighbor's, §143.122 requires six months' written notice. Plan ahead before a re-fence.

National Price Context

HomeGuide's 2026 barbed wire guide lists $3 to $6 per linear foot installed nationally. Woven wire, pipe line posts and heavy bracing cost more. Not our quote.

For welded pipe frontage, see pipe fence. For working pens, see cattle pens and pipe gates.
