Vinyl and composite are for people who are done staining. Both are on Lubbock's approved list for residential fences, both hold their color without paint, and neither one rots, warps or feeds termites. The trade-off is movement: plastic-based fence grows and shrinks with temperature, and the South Plains swings a lot.

Spaced boards or a lattice top let air through. That's a real advantage in a windy town: less load on the posts and less chance a panel pops out of its rail.

Picket fence for front yards (inside the 48-inch front-setback limit) and two- or three-rail vinyl for acreage looks.
Composite boards blend wood fiber and plastic around a solid core, so they look like stained wood up close. They're heavier than vinyl and usually ride in aluminum or steel posts. If you want a horizontal-board modern look without a yearly stain, this is the material we'd steer you to.
ASTM F964 covers rigid PVC fence profiles, and ASTM F1999 covers installing vinyl fence systems. Our working rule beyond the standards is simple: follow the manufacturer's expansion gaps to the letter. NOAA's 1991–2020 normals for Lubbock show 84 nights a year at or below freezing and about 92 days at 90°F or more, with a normal April high-low gap near 30 degrees. A rail cut tight in a cool morning can bow by afternoon.
Wind is the other test. A full privacy vinyl fence behaves like any solid fence in a gust, so we size post spacing for the height and avoid long, unbroken runs facing open ground when a semi-privacy style would work.
HomeGuide's 2026 vinyl guide lists vinyl fence at $30 to $60 per linear foot installed overall and vinyl privacy at $40 to $85. National figures only; your quote breaks out panels, posts, gates and tear-out.
