Fence Company Slaton TX - Cedar, Metal & Ranch Fence

Slaton was built by the railroad, laid out on purpose, and it still has rules that reflect that. We build privacy fence, metal fence, gates and ranch fence for Slaton homes, the historic streets near the square, and the farm ground around town. We check Slaton's own code before we set a post.

A Railroad Town With a Planned Street Grid

The Handbook of Texas says the Santa Fe Railroad bought Slaton's townsite in April 1911 as a division point. The town opened that June with a street pattern modeled on the layout of Washington, D.C. It became the center of the largest division in the Santa Fe system and had a Harvey House restaurant at the tracks. Slaton sits on U.S. 84 southeast of Lubbock. The Census Bureau estimates its 2025 population at 5,684.

Slaton's Front-Yard Rule

Slaton's zoning ordinance (Ordinance 173, adopted 1977, §13) treats the front yard as a view corridor. On any lot with a required front yard, no fence, wall or hedge may obstruct the view. Specifically, anything higher than a sloped baseline is an obstruction. That baseline runs from 2½ feet above the walk to 4½ feet above the walk at the depth of the required front yard. In plain terms, a front-yard fence near the sidewalk has to stay low, about 2½ feet. Lubbock's flat 48-inch front-setback limit doesn't carry over, so we measure Slaton front yards from the walk before we design anything.

The Historic District: Approval Before Fencing

Slaton has a Historic Preservation District (Ordinance 699, adopted 2008). Its certificate-of-appropriateness section covers any material change to fences, sidewalks, paving and other exterior elements visible from a public right-of-way at a landmark or a property in the district. New construction and exterior renovation need a certificate of appropriateness, and the proposals go to the Slaton Historic Preservation Commission. The district rules allow single-family homes on lots adjoining Texas Avenue from the City square to Industrial Drive, and those homeowners must go through the same certificate process. Tenant parking in the district goes behind a 4-foot fence where the site allows. If your property is in that area, we'll design the fence to fit and leave time for the review.

Ground Around Slaton

The USDA's official description of the Acuff soil series, one of the most extensive in Lubbock County, uses a cultivated field west of Slaton on Farm Road 41 as its type location. That profile shows a calcium-carbonate layer starting about 38 inches down, plugged at about 55 percent carbonate by volume in the 38-to-58-inch zone. That's the caliche fence crews hit. In town, USDA maps the center of Slaton as Amarillo-Urban land complex. Either way, we drill when we need to and set posts in concrete.

Permits in Slaton

The City of Slaton's Building Services page says permits are required for various residential and commercial construction projects. Building permit applications are turned in with payment in person at City Hall. Slaton's published pages don't list a fence-specific permit threshold, so we confirm with Building Services before each job. Before any digging, we call Texas 811 at least 48 hours ahead, not counting weekends and holidays.
